The English Football League is investigating claims a Southampton staff member filmed a closed Middlesbrough training session before their playoff semi-final.

The English Football League (EFL) has launched an investigation into allegations that a member of Southampton's staff was caught filming a closed training session held by their Championship playoff rivals, Middlesbrough. The incident is said to have occurred just days before the two sides are set to meet in the first leg of their playoff semi-final on Saturday at the Riverside Stadium.
An EFL spokesperson confirmed to the Southern Daily Echo that the league has sent a formal letter to Southampton requesting their observations. This follows a complaint from Middlesbrough regarding what the league describes as "unauthorised filming" prior to Saturday's match.
"The alleged incident is said to have taken place on private property belonging to Middlesbrough by an individual identified as being connected to Southampton," the spokesperson stated. The league is treating the matter as a potential breach of its regulations, specifically as possible improper conduct, and has said it will not offer further comment at this stage.
According to the BBC, a Southampton performance analyst was discovered filming videos of Middlesbrough's training session and taking pictures of the team's tactics on Thursday morning. The analyst was reportedly asked to delete the footage and leave the premises immediately.
EFL regulations explicitly prohibit clubs from monitoring, or attempting to monitor, another club's training sessions within the 72-hour period leading up to a match. The first leg of the playoff semi-final is scheduled for Saturday.
