Real Madrid Taps Vinicius Junior as New Dressing Room Leader
Florentino Perez has asked Vinicius Junior to step up as the new leader in Real Madrid's dressing room, according to Spanish radio reports.

Despite a season of inconsistent performances, Real Madrid is placing its faith in Brazilian star Vinicius Junior, who wore the captain's armband in the recent Clásico against Barcelona. Club president Florentino Perez has reportedly asked the player to take a step forward and assume responsibility for leading the dressing room in the coming period, according to the program "Radioestadio" on Spanish station Onda Cero.
This push comes amid growing internal discussions about a leadership vacuum within the squad following the departures of key figures like Karim Benzema, Casemiro, and Toni Kroos. Perez sees Vinicius, who wears the number 7 shirt, as possessing the personality and talent to become a leading face in Real Madrid's new project, with this role set to begin effectively from next season.
Within the club's corridors at Valdebebas, the player is highly regarded by both management and the coaching staff, despite the criticism his level has faced this season. Sources indicate the club plans to renew his contract, which runs until 2027, while granting him a larger role within the team, even as his future is not yet definitively settled.
Vinicius is viewed as a key element in Real Madrid's return to winning ways, having been decisive in the team's Champions League triumphs in 2022 and 2024. However, the absence of the veteran leaders who accompanied him during that period has led club officials to demand he develop his leadership personality to become a role model inside the dressing room.
Those close to him acknowledge that his performance this season has not been at its best, but they insist the player understands the weight of responsibility on his shoulders and is ready to correct course. Spanish reports indicate that one goal of the new project, likely to be led by Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho, is to build strong harmony between Vinicius and Kylian Mbappé, the duo expected to lead Real Madrid's attack next season. Perez hopes this pair will form the core of a new generation capable of returning the royal club to the top of Europe after a trophyless season.
