Apple's debut smart glasses, internally known as the N50, will now arrive approximately a year later than initially planned, with a launch expected in late 2027 instead of late 2026. The delay is attributed to Siri's current inability to support the glasses' core visual AI features, according to Bloomberg Power On (May 31, 2026).

The N50 does not include an augmented reality display but relies on cameras, speakers, and microphones to enable Siri to recognize objects in the user's environment and provide relevant information, such as identifying a restaurant or the author of a book. This functionality positions Siri's visual AI as the essential feature rather than an additional component. Reports from 9to5Mac (May 31, 2026) indicate that Apple chose to postpone the release to avoid launching a product that might seem incomplete.

This postponement highlights ongoing challenges within Apple Intelligence, where Siri has lagged behind competitors for over a year, missing key deadlines on the iPhone and raising concerns about HomePod integration. The delay of the N50 further underscores these issues.

Meanwhile, competitors continue advancing their offerings. Meta's Ray-Ban Gen 2 glasses, priced between $299 and $499, saw sales triple in 2025, and the $799 Ray-Ban Display model demonstrated consumer willingness to invest in smart eyewear. By the time Apple introduces its glasses, Meta will have established two years of brand loyalty and ecosystem engagement among early users.

Google and Samsung are also progressing with their Android XR audio glasses, developed in collaboration with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, scheduled for release in fall 2026, a full year ahead of Apple's expected launch, according to Engadget (June 1, 2026).

Apple intends to price the N50 between $200 and $500, positioning it to compete directly with Meta's Ray-Ban lineup rather than above it. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman notes that Apple plans to differentiate the product through design, offering four acetate frame styles, and by leveraging deep integration with the iPhone. The Apple brand itself is expected to contribute to the product's appeal.

The effectiveness of this strategy remains to be seen, especially after Meta and Google have had two years to cultivate user habits. For now, consumers interested in AI-powered smart glasses have several alternatives available before Apple's entry into the market.
