Galaxy Z Fold 8's Wider Design Offers No Real Video Space Gain

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 introduces a wider foldable design, marking the company's first new foldable form factor in several years. However, this change does not translate into a meaningful improvement in usable screen space for video playback.

Previous Galaxy Z Fold models have been well-suited for activities like reading, web browsing, and multitasking, but their aspect ratios limited video viewing experiences. The Galaxy Z Fold 7, for instance, offered roughly the same usable video space as the Galaxy S26 Ultra, despite its larger display.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 maintains this trend, providing almost identical usable screen area for video as both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and the Fold 7. This holds true across various content types; for example, movie trailers with a 21:9 aspect ratio, such as those for Spider-Man or Avengers, occupy less screen space, and even standard YouTube videos cannot fully utilize the Fold 8's display.

Additionally, the 4:3 aspect ratio screen results in captions having less room beneath videos when enabled, which is a notable drawback. While the Fold 8 does reduce wasted space during video playback compared to previous models, this does not amount to a significant upgrade.

The device's form factor is smaller overall, offering a larger canvas within a more compact size, somewhat akin to using an iPad Mini for streaming. Black bars remain present but are less prominent than before.

Although the wider design was anticipated to enhance video viewing, it ultimately falls short of expectations in this regard.

Pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra began today.
