Google’s Android earthquake early warning system uses motion sensors in billions of smartphones as a distributed seismic network to send alerts seconds before destructive waves arrive.

Recent seismic activity has renewed attention on Google’s earthquake early warning system for Android devices. The system issues alerts to users seconds before damaging seismic waves reach their location—potentially enabling risk-reducing actions.
The technology relies on a global network of billions of Android smartphones equipped with motion sensors. These devices collectively function as distributed seismic radars, detecting abnormal ground vibrations. Detected signals are transmitted to Google’s servers for analysis. Only after confirming an earthquake has occurred does the system dispatch alerts to users near the affected area.
The system activates automatically on most modern Android phones. Users may manually enable or disable it via Safety & Emergency settings under the “Earthquake alerts” option. It is available in numerous countries, including Saudi Arabia, and integrates with local seismic monitoring systems where such infrastructure exists.
The system does not guarantee warnings for all earthquakes. Its accuracy depends on user location, quake magnitude, and data processing speed. In some instances, alerts may arrive before, during, or after shaking begins.
