Modern Warfare 4 Launches on Next-Gen Consoles Without Day One Game Pass
Modern Warfare 4 will release on October 23, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, excluding last-gen consoles and Day One Game Pass availability.

Modern Warfare 4 is set to launch on October 23, 2026, exclusively for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms, marking the first time since 2013 that the Call of Duty franchise has omitted support for previous-generation consoles such as PS4 and Xbox One.
Developed by Infinity Ward, the game’s campaign unfolds amid a conflict on the Korean Peninsula, where North Korean missile attacks cause widespread blackouts and chaos in South Korean cities. Players will follow a squad of American soldiers aiding younger Korean fighters during the crisis. The campaign also features Captain Price, who operates a separate war effort parallel to the main conflict. The storyline extends to locations including New York, Paris, and Mumbai, maintaining the franchise's signature cinematic global scope.
Multiplayer and Pre-Order Information
Details about the multiplayer mode remain undisclosed, with a dedicated reveal event scheduled for June 7, 2026, as indicated at the conclusion of the announcement trailer. One confirmed feature is the return of the DMZ extraction mode. Pre-orders are currently available through the Official Call of Duty blog.
Pricing and Platform Availability
The standard edition of Modern Warfare 4 is priced at $70 in the United States and £70 in the United Kingdom. The Vault Edition, which typically includes the battle pass and operator packs, is offered at $100. Additionally, a version for the Nintendo Switch 2 has been confirmed, although its release date has not yet been announced.
Subscribers to Xbox Game Pass will not have access to the game on launch day. Activision has confirmed that Modern Warfare 4 will arrive on the service approximately 12 months after release, expected around late 2027.
Strategic Release Timing and Market Context
The choice of the October 23 launch date appears strategic, preceding the anticipated November 2026 release of GTA 6. Historically, Call of Duty titles have faced challenges launching simultaneously with Rockstar games, so an earlier release may be intended to avoid direct competition.
The decision to discontinue support for last-generation consoles and to withhold Day One Game Pass availability raises questions about the impact on player adoption, particularly regarding how many users have transitioned to current-generation hardware. The Korean Peninsula setting may also play a role in attracting players who disengaged following the release of Black Ops 7, which sold 401,000 copies on Steam in its first 26 days, a significant decline compared to Black Ops 6’s 2.3 million copies during the same period, according to Gamermarkt analysis.
