On May 24, 2026, Star Citizen's total crowdfunding exceeded $1 billion, surpassing the combined budgets of Cyberpunk 2077 and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, according to Neowin. The last $100 million was raised within six months, increasing from $900 million in December 2025.

Development of Star Citizen began in 2012 under Cloud Imperium Games, with an initial release planned for 2014. The project was originally pitched as a space MMO with expansive ambitions. However, after 14 years, the game remains in a persistent alpha state, continuously selling virtual spacecraft, some costing over $27,000.

The studio has expanded to more than 1,000 employees across locations in Manchester, Austin, Frankfurt, and Montreal. Chris Roberts, the founder of Cloud Imperium Games, has frequently stated that the project is approaching completion, though each announced milestone has been followed by new goals. Critics, including notable games journalists, have questioned Roberts’ management and whether a full 1.0 version will ever be released.

Squadron 42 Single-Player Campaign

Before the MMO's launch, Cloud Imperium is aiming to release Squadron 42, a standalone single-player campaign, in 2026. Variety reports that Roberts described this campaign as being in the "closing stages" of development. The game offers over 40 hours of gameplay and features a Hollywood cast that includes Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Henry Cavill, Gillian Anderson, Mark Strong, and Andy Serkis.

The 2026 release window for Squadron 42 has been labeled as "feature-locked," but Insider Gaming notes that Roberts used the term "hopeful" rather than a firm confirmation, which is notable given the project's history of similar claims in previous years.

The pace of crowdfunding has accelerated significantly. While it took more than ten years to reach $900 million, the final $100 million was collected in just six months. This suggests either new backers joining despite earlier skepticism or existing supporters increasing their contributions. Cloud Imperium now holds the largest crowdfunding total in gaming history, yet the project's completion date remains uncertain.

The release of Squadron 42 in 2026 will serve as a critical indicator of whether the $1 billion raised represents a successful investment or a different outcome altogether.
