The Belgian national team continued its strong performance in the 2026 World Cup by earning a place in the quarterfinals after overcoming the United States in a match marked by numerous historic statistics and individual accomplishments. These achievements underscore the strength of the "Red Devils" in knockout stages and cement the status of several of their stars in the tournament's records.

Belgium has now reached the World Cup quarterfinals for the fourth time in its history and for the third time in the last four editions, following their successes in 2014 and 2018. This consistency confirms Belgium’s presence among the world’s leading teams over the past decade.

Additionally, Belgium became the fifth European Union representative to reach the 2026 quarterfinals. This marks the third consecutive World Cup where European teams have accounted for more than half of the quarterfinalists, with five teams, or six if Switzerland qualifies.

This level of European representation was previously achieved only once in the four tournaments before 2026, when six European teams advanced to the 2006 World Cup quarterfinals.

Belgium has also reinforced its dominance in knockout matches against non-European teams, having advanced in five of its last six World Cup elimination games against teams outside the European Union, including the last four consecutive matches.

United States Faces Recurring Round of 16 Exit

On the other hand, the United States continued to struggle in the round of 16, exiting the tournament at this stage for the sixth time in seven appearances reaching the last 16. This marks the fourth consecutive World Cup—2010, 2014, 2022, and now 2026—that the U.S. team’s journey ended at this round.

De Ketelaere Sets New World Cup Record

Charles De Ketelaere stood out as one of the match’s key players by scoring two goals and assisting another. According to available records dating back to 1966, he is the first Belgian player to contribute to three goals in a single World Cup or European Championship match.

Romelu Lukaku continued to demonstrate his significant value even when starting from the bench. He became the first player in World Cup history to score as a substitute in four different matches. Moreover, he achieved a unique milestone by being the first player to score as a substitute in three separate games within a single tournament edition.

Tilman Matches a 44-Year-Old Free Kick Record

Malik Tilman also entered the World Cup records by becoming only the second player since 1966 to score two goals from direct free kicks in a single tournament. He equaled the feat of French player Bernard Genghini, who accomplished this in the 1982 World Cup.

Trossard Joins Elite Belgian Players

Thanks to his assist in the match, Leandro Trossard raised his tournament tally to two goals and two assists. He became the third Belgian player since 1966 to record more than one goal and more than one assist in a single World Cup edition, following Eden Hazard in 2018 and Jan Ceulemans in 1986.

The Belgian squad demonstrated its depth by increasing the combined goals scored by substitutes Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku to five in the 2026 World Cup, the highest total by any team in the tournament so far.

Courtois Advances in World Cup History

Individually, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois played his 20th World Cup final match, equaling French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris for second place on the list of goalkeepers with the most appearances in World Cup history. The leader remains German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, with 23 matches.

These collective and individual statistics reflect the stability within the Belgian team and their capacity to compete effectively in critical World Cup stages. As their stars continue to break records, the "Red Devils" maintain their ambition to advance far in the 2026 tournament and contend for the global title.
