FIFA Breaks Cooling Break Rule in Mexico vs Ecuador Match at 2026 World Cup
FIFA delayed the Mexico-Ecuador match to 5:00 AM and canceled cooling breaks due to cooler weather, marking a first at the 2026 World Cup.

The Mexico versus Ecuador match, initially scheduled to begin at 04:00 AM during the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, was postponed to 05:00 AM due to weather conditions, in compliance with established safety protocols.
According to the French network RMC, FIFA decided to hold the match without any water breaks, making it the first game in the 2026 World Cup not to include the cooling breaks that the international federation had implemented in all other matches so far in the tournament.
This decision followed observations of a drop in temperatures in Mexico City, which eliminated the need for the usual cooling breaks that had been enforced in other matches due to hot weather in several host cities.
FIFA issued an official statement confirming the match delay was caused by the threat of thunderstorms near the stadium. The organization emphasized that the safety of players, fans, and all participants is the highest priority and that the game would proceed once conditions were deemed safe.
The international federation also expressed gratitude to the spectators for their understanding and cooperation during the postponement period.
The winner of the Mexico-Ecuador match is set to face the victor of the England versus Democratic Republic of Congo game in the round of 16.
