FIFA Clarifies VAR Controversy in Qatar vs. Switzerland Match
FIFA addressed the VAR controversy during the Qatar-Switzerland 2026 World Cup match, attributing the issue to a temporary technical fault affecting broadcast visuals only.

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) issued an official statement following widespread debate surrounding the Qatar versus Switzerland match at the 2026 World Cup, which concluded in a 1-1 draw amid disputes over video assistant referee (VAR) decisions.
The match became the center of intense controversy after a penalty was awarded to Switzerland in the 13th minute, following contact inside the penalty area between Qatar’s goalkeeper Mahmoud Abu Nada and Swiss player Remo Freuler. Breel Embolo converted the penalty to give Switzerland the lead.
The incident sparked significant debate due to the intervention of VAR technology, particularly because the usual offside lines and explanatory graphics were not displayed during the review. This absence led players and analysts to question the accuracy of the ruling.
In its statement, FIFA explained that the issue stemmed from a "temporary technical malfunction" in the system responsible for displaying VAR graphics. The organization emphasized that this fault was limited to the television broadcast and did not impact the refereeing process within the VAR room.

FIFA further clarified that VAR officials conducted the review normally, employing the full range of technical tools, and that the lines used confirmed there was no offside in the play leading up to the penalty.
The statement underscored that the referee’s decision was correct according to established protocols, noting that the only problem was the absence of the visual display for the audience.
Despite FIFA’s official clarification, discussions persisted among media and fans regarding the transparency of VAR usage during the tournament, particularly in critical moments.
