World Cup 2026
FIFA's Detailed Tiebreaker Criteria for 2026 World Cup Group Stage
FIFA has outlined the step-by-step tiebreaker rules to rank teams tied on points in the 2026 World Cup group stage.

When two or more teams finish the group stage of the 2026 World Cup with equal points, FIFA applies a sequence of tiebreaking criteria to determine their rankings within the group.
The first set of criteria focuses on matches played exclusively between the tied teams:
- The highest number of points obtained in the group matches among the concerned teams.
- The superior goal difference in those matches.
- The greatest number of goals scored in those matches.
If the rankings remain unresolved after applying these criteria, further measures are taken considering all group matches involving the tied teams:
- The best overall goal difference across all group matches.
- The highest total number of goals scored in all group matches.
- The team with the better disciplinary record, determined by the fewest yellow and red cards accumulated by players and team officials.
Should these steps still fail to separate the teams, FIFA resorts to the latest published edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men's World Ranking to order the tied teams.
Tiebreaking Among Third-Place Teams
To identify the top eight third-placed teams advancing from the group stage, FIFA uses the following criteria:
- The highest number of points obtained in all group matches.
- The best disciplinary record, based on yellow and red cards received by players and officials during all group matches.
- If teams remain tied, their order is determined by the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Men's World Ranking publication.
