Iraq's Flag Displayed at 2026 World Cup Despite Pre-Match Controversy
Iraq’s flag featuring the phrase "Allah Akbar" was raised at the 2026 World Cup kickoff, ending debate over FIFA’s initial reported refusal to display it on the field.

Before the opening match between Iraq and Norway at the 2026 World Cup, the pre-game ceremony attracted significant attention due to a controversy surrounding the display of Iraq’s national flag. Reports had circulated hours before kickoff suggesting that FIFA might refuse to allow the Iraqi flag on the pitch because it contains the phrase "Allah" in its design, raising concerns linked to previous instances involving flags with religious symbolism.
The situation was compared to a past case involving Saudi Arabia’s flag, where FIFA implemented special measures regarding the flag’s placement on the field during pre-match ceremonies. Iraqi media reported that FIFA justified its potential refusal by citing damage caused to the wet pitch during Saudi Arabia’s matches when the flag was displayed, and stated that such procedures would not be repeated in future games.
However, at the start of the Iraq-Norway match, the Iraqi flag bearing the phrase "Allah Akbar" was raised prominently instead of being placed on the ground as is customary for other teams, except Saudi Arabia. This marked a departure from the initial reports and confirmed the flag’s presence during the official proceedings.
Iraq is competing in a challenging group alongside France, Norway, and Senegal. The team began its World Cup campaign with a heavy 1-4 defeat to Norway on Wednesday. Iraq is scheduled to face France and Senegal in the upcoming group stage matches of the 2026 World Cup, which is currently taking place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
