New York Mayor Zaharan Mamdani Jokes Egypt Was 'Robbed' Against Argentina
New York Mayor Zaharan Mamdani sparked reactions by unexpectedly referencing Egypt's controversial loss to Argentina during a press conference on public transport improvements.
Zaharan Mamdani, the mayor of New York, drew widespread attention when he unexpectedly mentioned the Egypt versus Argentina match during a press briefing focused on plans to enhance public transportation services in New York City.
Egypt's national team had been eliminated from the tournament after a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Argentina in a game marked by several contentious refereeing decisions. Notably, a goal by Mustafa Abdelraouf Ziko was disallowed following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervention, and Egyptian players requested a penalty kick in the final minutes that was not reviewed by VAR.
While discussing the significance of improving public transit to save time, Mamdani stated, "Saving time on transportation means many things; it means having breakfast with your family and arriving home at bedtime."
He then added jokingly amid laughter from the audience, "It also means having enough time to agree with your friends that the Egyptian team was robbed by Argentina yesterday."
