During Morocco's narrow 1-0 victory at Gillette Stadium, a significant portion of Scotland supporters directed continuous boos at Achraf Hakimi, the Paris Saint-Germain full-back and Morocco's captain. The intensity of the hostile reception increased as the match progressed, coinciding with recent developments in Hakimi's personal life.

The vocal Tartan Army escalated their jeering each time Hakimi touched the ball in Foxborough, with the noise peaking during a 20th-minute corner kick. The crowd's hostility reached its highest point when Hakimi fouled Kieran Tierney to stop a counter-attack before halftime. This reaction followed the official announcement on Friday that Hakimi will face trial on rape charges related to an alleged incident from February 2023.

The persistent booing drew attention from the UK broadcasting team covering the match. ITV co-commentator Ally McCoist commented, “Not sure what Hakimi has done to upset the locals, but he’s done something,” highlighting the unusual level of disruption during live coverage.

Hakimi has publicly denied the assault allegations made by a 24-year-old woman. Prior to the match, he posted on X: “I’ve been waiting for this trial since day one. And now I’m looking forward to it. Finally, I will be able to speak.”

On the field, Morocco secured an early lead thanks to Ismael Saibari, who scored after just 69 seconds. This goal equaled Mohamed Salah's record of scoring in his first two World Cup appearances. The win temporarily placed Morocco at the top of Group C, although they later dropped to second on goal difference after Brazil defeated Haiti 3-0.

Looking ahead, Morocco will face Haiti in Atlanta on Wednesday, needing only a draw to confirm their advancement to the knockout stage. Scotland, meanwhile, will travel to Miami to challenge group leaders Brazil. Steve Clarke's team must improve their finishing after failing to convert second-half chances against Morocco.
