Brazilian Police Foil Election-Day Attack Plot Targeting Brasília

Brazilian civil police carried out an operation on Tuesday targeting individuals suspected of plotting violent attacks in Brasília during the upcoming October 2026 presidential election. The operation aims to disrupt plans by a group seeking to undermine the electoral process while President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva campaigns for a new term.

Eight suspects under investigation

The probe involves eight people aged between 19 and 31, residing across five Brazilian states. According to an official police statement, intercepted communications among the suspects contained “repeated references to Brasília as a destination for planned action during the 2026 electoral period.”

Explosives, tactics, and recruitment discussed

Authorities confirmed that the suspects exchanged “evidence related to the manufacture of explosive devices” and held discussions covering “building invasions, target selection, tactical training, and recruitment in various regions.” The operation is led by Brasília’s Civil Police Division for Prevention and Combat of Violent Extremism.

Scope of the operation

Police seek to seize electronic devices and assess “the degree of organization and level of advancement in implementing the plans discussed” by the suspects. Investigators are examining potential criminal charges including formation of a criminal gang and praise of criminal acts. At this stage, the facts under investigation do not fall under Brazil’s anti-terrorism legislation.

Election context and political backdrop

Lula da Silva, leader of the left-wing coalition, officially declared his candidacy for another presidential term. His main opponent in the October vote will be right-wing candidate Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who served from 2019 to 2022 and is currently imprisoned on charges related to an attempted coup.

On 8 January 2023, a crowd of Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalized official institutions in Brasília, demanding military intervention to remove Lula just one week after his inauguration.
