British Defense Minister John Healey Resigns Over Disputes With Starmer
British Defense Minister John Healey resigned citing disagreements with Prime Minister Keir Starmer on defense spending.

John Healey, the British Defense Minister, announced his resignation on Thursday, attributing it to disagreements with Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding defense expenditure.
In his resignation letter addressed to Starmer, Healey stated, "I have failed, as has the Treasury, to commit the resources the country needs to defend itself at a time when threats are escalating."
Healey shared the resignation letter on the platform X, describing it as "the letter I never expected to write."
The letter emphasized that "this era requires increased investment in defense through the Defense Investment Plan."
He added that "the excellent and extensive joint government work completed in January, which you, the Treasury Minister, and I oversaw, confirmed the scale of the challenge and the rising demands in the defense sector."
Healey continued, "However, the financial settlement for your Defense Investment Plan (DIP), which I first received in full on Monday, falls far short of what is needed for defense and the country at this critical time."
He noted that the additional support is scheduled for later stages, while "operational pressures and the urgent need to accelerate combat readiness are concentrated in the first two years, and the budget only rises to 2.68% of GDP by 2030, whereas we will reach 2.6% next year with the investment already underway."
Healey pointed out, "You (Starmer) know what the defense sector requires. You strongly emphasized this in your speech at the Munich Security Conference in February."
He warned that "without a Defense Investment Plan (DIP) that meets the scale of the challenge in this way, I find myself compelled to make decisions that will reduce our forces' readiness, increase risks to personnel during operations, and potentially make the country less secure."
He concluded, "After making it clear to you that I cannot accept a settlement for the Defense Investment Plan that does not provide our forces with the resources they need, I have no option but to submit my resignation as Defense Minister in your government."
