Fire Erupts on Oil Tanker After Explosion Near Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Revolutionary Guard Reports

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced early Thursday that a fire broke out on one of three oil tankers after an explosion occurred while attempting to cross a route described as mined in the southern part of the Strait of Hormuz. The other two tankers reportedly changed their course.

In a statement published by Tasnim News Agency, the Revolutionary Guard said that three ships were intending to pass through the southern minefield route in the Strait of Hormuz. However, after a massive explosion and fire on one tanker, the other two vessels turned back.

The Revolutionary Guard further asserted its control over the Strait of Hormuz, declaring that the strait is "completely closed" amid ongoing U.S. military operations in the area.

It was stated that no tanker would be permitted to enter or exit the strait without coordination with Iran and according to Iranian arrangements.

The statement did not specify the names of the ships involved or the exact timing of the incident.
