Germany announces its readiness to reduce the American presence on its territory
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said that his country is ready for the possibility of reducing the American military presence on its territory, and that it awaits "calmly" Washington's decisions in this regard.
This came in response to statements by US President Donald Trump, yesterday, Wednesday, in which he said that his country intends to reduce its military presence in Germany, where there are about 35,000 American troops.
Signs of disagreement appeared between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz this week, regarding the war with Iran.
Merz had affirmed today the importance of the transatlantic partnership, a few hours after Trump's announcement.
In his speech to journalists at a military base in Münster, Merz said that Germany's compass is still directed towards a strong NATO and a reliable transatlantic partnership.
He added: "As you know, this transatlantic partnership is particularly close to our hearts... and to my heart personally."
Earlier today, Thursday, Trump said he was looking into reducing the size of American troops in Germany, and said via his platform "Truth Social" that "America is studying and reviewing the possibility of reducing the number of troops in Germany, and the decision will be made in the near future."
