Netanyahu in New York for Hours: A Fleeting Visit or a Meeting with Trump?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is traveling to New York on Thursday morning, in a visit that could be one of the shortest to the United States, where he is scheduled to deliver a speech before the United Nations General Assembly before departing the city the same day, returning to Israel—meaning he may not spend any night on American soil.

The visit schedule has undergone several changes in recent days, after Netanyahu had originally planned to arrive in the U.S. earlier, with an added stop in Texas to meet billionaire Elon Musk and discuss a possible visit to SpaceX facilities.

An Israeli team had already arrived in Texas and begun preparations before being informed over the weekend of the cancellation of the stop. According to Israeli officials, Netanyahu made the decision to cancel the visit, according to Israel’s Jerusalem Post.

Cancellation of the Texas Stop

The cancellation of the Texas visit significantly reduced the program, with officials citing logistical complexities, including the inability of the official aircraft, “Zion Wing,” to fly directly from Israel to Texas without refueling at an intermediate stop.

Some members of the delegation might have traveled separately on commercial flights, but there was no indication these difficulties were the reason for the cancellation.

The current schedule does not include a meeting between Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump, despite efforts by aides to arrange one.

A senior U.S. official said Netanyahu is not among the leaders scheduled to meet Trump during the General Assembly sessions.

Iran and Gaza

Under the current program, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to be the top American official meeting Netanyahu in New York, while the final agenda remains under preparation.

Netanyahu’s visit comes amid a packed diplomatic week, with around 130 world leaders and government representatives attending, focusing widely on Iran, the war in Gaza, and regional developments.

Netanyahu’s speech is expected to draw protests both inside and outside the UN headquarters, as New York authorities have heightened security measures, deploying thousands of police officers and security personnel to protect delegations.

U.S. and local security officials said there are currently no known specific threats targeting the General Assembly meetings, despite tightened security around the UN headquarters and major city thoroughfares.

The visit also comes amid sharp statements from New York City Mayor Zehran Mammadani directed at Netanyahu, following earlier remarks suggesting potential actions based on the ICC arrest warrant issued against him—though the mayor later clarified that any action would be subject to U.S. law.
