A New Battle Looms in the Senate: Republicans Prepare for Trump Impeachment Scenario
As Democrats rally for congressional elections, party leaders reveal plans to initiate a third impeachment of President Donald Trump upon regaining control of the House. However, this strategy faces significant internal division and legal hurdles.

With Democrats rallying their ranks for congressional elections, urgent plans and proposals have surfaced, revealed by party leadership aiming to begin impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump for a third time immediately upon expected control of the House.
While the progressive wing establishes mechanisms for this strategy to be implemented in 2027, it faces severe reservations and sharp divisions from traditional leaders, who warn of the consequences of pursuing impeachment and its direct impact on the 2028 presidential race.
Two-thirds approval of members
Traditional party leaders rely on a legal and arithmetic obstacle; while passing an impeachment article in the House is easier, actual removal requires the approval of two-thirds of the Senate members.
According to an Axios report, Representative Jamie Raskin (a constitutional law professor, former leader of the second impeachment proceedings in 2021, and candidate for chairing the Judiciary Committee) believes that Trump has tightened his grip on the Republican Party and eliminated dissenting voices, making achieving a two-thirds majority practically impossible.
Consequently, leaders such as former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Senator Tammy Duckworth warn against sliding down the impeachment path, calling for a focus on legislative investigations and avoiding "political chaos."
Capacity to manage the impeachment file
In contrast, the progressive wing refuses to relinquish the weapon of impeachment. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Representative Ro Khana emphasize that the issue concerns establishing constitutional principles and the rule of law, stressing the party's ability to manage the impeachment file in parallel with pushing an agenda to lower living costs and address healthcare and Medicaid issues.
This divergence extends to presumptive 2028 presidential candidates, as evidenced by Senator Jon Ossoff's shift from unequivocal support for impeachment to adopting a more cautious and deliberate stance.
Trump and Vance's strategy
On the other side, the White House and the Republican camp treat these moves as an opportunity for partisan mobilization.
Despite Trump's assertion of respecting the "sanctity of the presidency" and his denial of any wrongdoing, reports from those close to him indicate that he finds his ideal environment in facing escalation.
The Axios report adds that the Trump administration and his political team, led by Vice President JD Vance, are betting that Democratic insistence on impeachment will portray them to the public as preoccupied with political enmity at the expense of economic crises.
Furthermore, Republicans hold a decisive procedural card: the possibility of a direct vote in the Senate to dismiss charges immediately without a full trial, relying on the precedent established by Democrats themselves in 2024 in the case of Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Vance views this as an opportunity to unite Republican ranks and turn the charges into a tool for electoral mobilization.
