South Korea Defers Decision on Military Assets in Strait of Hormuz Ahead

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun stated on Thursday that his country has not yet made a decision on deploying military assets to the Strait of Hormuz. The announcement came just before his departure for Washington, where he is scheduled to hold discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Review of Maritime Security Contribution

Speaking to reporters prior to his flight, Cho Hyun clarified that South Korea’s potential contribution to ensuring freedom of navigation through the strait remains under review. He explicitly denied that any final decision has been reached regarding the dispatch of troops or military equipment to the area.

Agenda for Bilateral Talks

The minister and Rubio are set to meet on Friday to discuss a range of issues, including bilateral relations, developments on the Korean Peninsula, and regional and international affairs. U.S. officials have been urging Seoul to participate in efforts safeguarding maritime traffic in the strategically vital waterway.

Economic and Security Commitments

The talks will also cover implementation mechanisms for South Korea’s $350 billion investment pledge in the United States, established under a prior trade agreement. In addition, security matters related to North Korea will be addressed during the meeting.

Diplomatic Balancing Act

The visit occurs as Seoul navigates competing priorities: maintaining its defense alliance with Washington while weighing concerns over possible repercussions from any military involvement in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has warned of serious consequences should South Korea take part in operations there.
