South Korean Army Helicopter Crosses DMZ Without Authorization During

An official audit has confirmed that a South Korean military helicopter violated airspace over the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) without authorization while engaged in wildfire suppression operations — an incident that occurred early this year.

Incident timeline and aircraft details

The audit findings, submitted to Kang Sun-young — a lawmaker from the opposition People’s Power Party — state that a Surion-model helicopter operated by the Republic of Korea Army Ground Forces inadvertently entered the DMZ on March 23 in the border town of Yeoncheon, located approximately 60 kilometers north of Seoul.

The aircraft, carrying two pilots, had been dispatched to extinguish forest fires within the sector assigned to the 5th Infantry Division. According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff’s audit report, it unintentionally crossed into the adjacent sector of the 25th Infantry Division — which lies inside the DMZ.

Unauthorized entry and cross-border operation

The helicopter entered the DMZ without prior approval from the United Nations Command, the body overseeing military activities in the area. Moreover, the audit states that the aircraft crossed the Military Demarcation Line into North Korea’s side and continued firefighting operations there for a period of time.

Command-level unawareness and disciplinary response

In a notable discrepancy, neither the Ground Operations Command nor the Frontline Corps — responsible for air surveillance in the region — was aware of the helicopter’s crossing at the time it occurred. Both commands learned of the incident only after notification from the Air Force’s main Control and Reporting Center.

Following the audit, the Ground Forces implemented administrative measures: formal warnings were issued to both the 1st and 5th Corps, and a reprimand was delivered to the Ground Operations Command.
