Syrian authorities announced they foiled a large-scale terrorist plot and dismantled a cell seeking to destabilize the country, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported, quoting a source in the Ministry of Interior, that the competent authorities foiled a large-scale terrorist plot and managed to dismantle a cell that was seeking to destabilize the country.
The source explained that foiling the plot came as a result of carrying out a simultaneous security operation that included several governorates within a coordinated campaign, which resulted in the arrest of all members of the cell, in addition to seizing weapons in their possession.
Earlier this month of May, Syrian media reported an explosion in the Sayyidah Zaynab area in the Damascus countryside, which turned out to be the result of a person throwing a bomb at a civilian car, and the explosion resulted in the killing of the imam of Sayyidah Zaynab.
On March 31 last, the Sayyidah Zaynab area also witnessed a security incident, where the Director of the Damascus Countryside Security Directorate, Lieutenant Colonel Hussam al-Tahan, said that the area was cordoned off and sweeping operations began, after a security patrol was attacked, according to what was reported by the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
In a statement by the Syrian Ministry of Interior, it explained that while one of the patrols was on a routine security tour in its vicinity in the Sayyidah Zaynab area, it was subjected to direct gunfire by elements of the remnants of the former regime; which led to an exchange of fire, in response to the attack.
According to Lieutenant Colonel al-Tahan, weapons and ammunition left by the attackers before their flight were found during the sweeping operation. The Sayyidah Zaynab area is a major gathering place for Shiites and their religious shrines in the Damascus countryside.
