Donald Trump praised Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez during a Kansas campaign event, contrasting her with other Democratic figures he criticized.

During a campaign appearance in Park City, Kansas, Donald Trump singled out Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for praise while attacking other prominent Democrats. Speaking at the Heartland Credit Union Arena, the former president stated that he liked AOC “better” than some of her colleagues, adding that “she’s doing her thing.”
The remarks occurred as Trump campaigned on behalf of Republican Sen. Roger Marshall, who is facing Democratic nominee Adam Hamilton in the upcoming election. The comment drew attention given Trump’s history of targeting Ocasio-Cortez, including calling her “stupid” in June 2025 and criticizing her statements at the Munich Security Conference in February.
Trump’s favorable mention stood in contrast to his previous attacks on progressive Democrats. He initially criticized Rep. Ilhan Omar and Rep. Rashida Tlaib before pivoting to Ocasio-Cortez. According to The Mirror US, Trump did not elaborate on the meaning behind his remark, instead continuing his critique of Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Maxine Waters.
This was not the first time Trump offered mixed signals about the New York congresswoman. In 2024, he described her as having “a spark that’s pretty amazing.” During another interview, he noted it would be nice to meet her, though he maintained his criticism of her political positions.
The Kansas rally took place shortly after Ocasio-Cortez traveled to Michigan to support Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed. She participated in campaign events across the Upper Peninsula and Detroit, including a rally in Pontiac. On October 16, she announced a transfer of $1 million from her campaign funds to aid El-Sayed’s bid for the Senate.
Trump also directly attacked El-Sayed by name during his speech in Kansas, incorporating the candidate into his broader criticism of the Democratic party. Meanwhile, speculation continues regarding Ocasio-Cortez’s future political ambitions. She has not announced plans to run for president in 2028 but stated she will decide whether to seek higher office after the midterm elections. Reports have also linked her to potential future Senate campaigns.
For now, the specific intent behind Trump’s comparison remains unexplained. His choice to favorably distinguish AOC from other Democrats marked a distinct shift from his usual rhetoric against the congresswoman.
