US Leases Land from Israel for Embassy in Jerusalem for $1
US Ambassador Mike Huckabee presented a $1 bill to Israel's Foreign Minister during the land lease signing for the US embassy in Jerusalem.
During a ceremony marking the land allocation for the permanent US embassy in Jerusalem, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee handed a one-dollar bill to Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar, stating that this amount represents what Washington will pay for the land.
Huckabee made these remarks at the official launch event for the embassy building project in Jerusalem on Wednesday, affirming that the United States "not only recognizes Jerusalem as the eternal capital of the Jewish people, but also raises the American flag on Jerusalem soil at a permanent and new embassy."
While holding up the dollar bill on stage, he explained that the land lease contract extends for 99 years and that the United States will pay Israel only one dollar for the lease.
On December 6, 2017, US President Donald Trump declared Jerusalem as Israel's capital and announced the beginning of the process to relocate the US embassy from Tel Aviv.
Subsequently, on May 18, 2018, Trump officially moved the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
