Venezuela’s First Dialogue Session Ends with Commitment to “Political, Peaceful, Democratic, and Constitutional Solution”

Venezuelan interim government and opposition delegates held their inaugural dialogue session in Caracas to address the country’s political transition process.

At the conclusion of the first meeting, both sides confirmed their mutual commitment to negotiate in good faith and to work toward what they described as a “political, peaceful, democratic and constitutional solution,” according to an official statement released on social media platforms.

Key Participants and U.S. Response

Dinora Figuera represented the opposition; she returned to Venezuela from exile on Wednesday. The interim government delegation was led by Jorge Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly and brother of the acting president.

The U.S. Department of State welcomed Figuera’s delegation and acknowledged the commencement of direct talks with Venezuela’s interim authorities.

State Department officials characterized the negotiations as a “unique opportunity” and urged all relevant parties to support the initiative in order to deliver tangible outcomes for the Venezuelan people.

Venue and Agenda

Photographers were the only members of the press permitted entry into the La Carlota military base, where the dialogue took place.

According to the official agenda jointly announced by both sides, the discussions covered the authorities’ response to the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on 24 June, which killed more than 6,000 people, as well as measures to strengthen democracy and political rights.

Opposition Figure Endorses Process

Maria Corina Machado, a leading opposition figure and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, stated she would not obstruct the dialogue process.

On the platform X, she declared: “A democratic transition in Venezuela will restore our freedom and prosperity,” adding that it would also establish “a vital and reliable ally for U.S. national security and regional stability.”
