Masad Paulos, the senior adviser for Arab and African affairs in the United States, affirmed that Washington remains committed to supporting initiatives aimed at establishing peace, stability, and prosperity in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and the Great Lakes region.

In a statement posted on the platform "X," he announced sanctions against prominent leaders of both the March 23 Movement (M23) and the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR). These measures respond to serious violations against civilians and actions undermining the peace process in eastern Congo.

Paulos emphasized that the United States reserves the right to take further measures against any country, individual, or group that threatens the prospects for peace and stability in the region, particularly those obstructing the implementation of the Washington agreements and related peace commitments.

He added that achieving lasting peace requires full commitment from all parties to their obligations. He stressed the importance of completing the withdrawal of Rwandan defense forces from Congolese territory without delay, alongside decisive steps by the Congolese government to neutralize the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda.

Paulos underscored that accountability, genuine compliance with agreements, and fulfillment of declared commitments are fundamental pillars to ensuring lasting security and long-term stability in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and the Great Lakes area.
