Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly proposed holding a direct meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In an open letter addressed to Putin, Zelensky suggested that the two leaders meet face to face.

In his message, Zelensky stated, "Ukraine proposes to end this war through direct dialogue between us and you. I propose holding a meeting." He also indicated that Ukraine is prepared to implement a comprehensive ceasefire for the duration of the negotiations, according to reports from Agence France-Presse.

Efforts to Accelerate Peace Talks Before Winter

Zelensky has recently expressed his intention to advance peace talks with Russia before the onset of winter, aiming to capitalize on the improved strategic position of Kyiv. Negotiations mediated by the United States to reach a peace agreement have stalled, partly due to Washington's focus shifting toward the conflict in Iran.

Ukrainian officials, including Zelensky, have noted a slowdown in Russian military advances on the ground. Meanwhile, Ukraine has intensified medium- and long-range strikes inside Russia, primarily targeting the Russian oil sector.

Speaking on CBS's "Face the Nation," Zelensky said, "It started in December 2025, when Russia began losing the initiative on the battlefield." He added, "So now we have this time before winter... before winter, we need to find a way... a diplomatic way to sit down and talk."
