Meta has released a mandatory update fixing the privacy light issue on its Ray-Ban smart glasses as reports emerge of a new model with always-on sensors that may lack such indicators.

Meta is deploying a mandatory update to its Ray-Ban smart glasses that disables the camera if the privacy light is broken, addressing concerns about misuse where the indicator was previously disabled by bad actors.
This update coincides with reports revealing Meta's development of “super sensing” smart glasses featuring microphones and cameras that remain continuously active. According to the Financial Times, this upcoming model may not activate the LED privacy light when the camera is in use.
Sources familiar with the matter indicate that executives currently plan not to turn on the LED during the use of these super-sensing features, which could make it more difficult for bystanders to detect when recording is occurring. However, these plans are not finalized and could change.
The report also suggests that these always-on sensing capabilities might be introduced to existing Meta Ray-Ban glasses. The continuous capture would not necessarily involve full video but would include photos taken every few seconds. The privacy light would not be used during these always-on captures, unlike when active recordings take place.
Meta’s 2025 policy paper, cited in the report, explains the rationale behind limiting the LED indicator’s use: if the LED were to blink for extended periods, such as during AI interactions, people might become desensitized to it, reducing awareness of when photos or videos are being captured for later use.
Regarding data utilization, Meta reportedly plans to feed raw sensor data directly into AI models without making the recordings accessible to users or Meta itself. This data would help users recall their day or obtain AI-generated answers about what they have seen or heard. A similar demonstration by Google showed an AI model recalling the location of objects during a live conversation, though that system was not always on but activated during user interaction.
