Ancelotti Expresses Regret Over Joao Pedro's World Cup Omission
Carlo Ancelotti has expressed regret after excluding Chelsea's Joao Pedro from Brazil's World Cup squad, acknowledging the striker's strong season. Despite Pedro's omission, he was named Chelsea's Player of the Season following a standout campaign.

Carlo Ancelotti has conveyed his apologies to Joao Pedro after the Chelsea forward was left out of Brazil’s squad for the upcoming World Cup. The coach highlighted the tough decisions involved in selecting a team, emphasizing a preference for experienced players, including Neymar, who has recently returned to the fold despite fitness issues.
Selection Challenges for Brazil's World Cup Squad
Despite Joao Pedro’s impressive performance in the Premier League, Ancelotti chose to prioritize seasoned players for Brazil’s national team. Neymar’s inclusion marked a significant decision, given his recent injury struggles. Ancelotti recognized that several players, including Pedro, would feel disappointed by the final roster.
"Some of the players who were with us this year won't be happy with this list," Ancelotti said. "I'm sorry, and I want to thank everyone who was with us. Of course, we are sad for Joao Pedro. For the season he had in Europe, he probably deserved to be on this list, but unfortunately, with all possible awareness and respect, we chose another player. I feel very sorry for Joao Pedro and all the others."
Joao Pedro's Recognition at Chelsea
Shortly after the World Cup squad announcement, Chelsea revealed that Joao Pedro had been voted the club’s Player of the Season. The striker, who transferred from Brighton for £60 million last summer, secured over 60% of the fan vote, surpassing teammates Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.
At 24 years old, Pedro has made a remarkable impact at Chelsea, scoring 15 goals and providing five assists in the Premier League. His 20 goal involvements place him among Chelsea legends such as Eden Hazard and Diego Costa for a debut top-flight season. Across all competitions, his contributions total 25 goal involvements.
Looking Ahead to Club Commitments
With World Cup duties off the table, Pedro will focus on concluding the season with Chelsea. The team is preparing for its final two Premier League matches, facing Tottenham first and then Sunderland, as they aim to secure qualification for European competition next season.
