Brighton & Hove Albion have reduced their asking price for Carlos Baleba from £100 million to £77 million, opening a potential window for Manchester United to revisit their pursuit of the midfielder.

The Red Devils have already been priced out of transfers for Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, and Mateus Fernandes this summer. They face similar challenges with Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, while also monitoring targets like Aurelien Tchouameni, Ayyoub Bouaddi, and Johan Manzambi. However, INEOS, Manchester United’s ownership group, reportedly favors players with Premier League experience.

Price Adjustment Reflects Baleba’s Recent Performance

Last summer, Manchester United attempted to sign Baleba, but Brighton’s £100 million valuation deterred the club. Since then, the Cameroonian midfielder struggled during the previous season, prompting Brighton to reconsider his market value.

Despite United’s interest, they have hesitated to increase their offer due to concerns Brighton might maintain their high asking price, especially given recent record-breaking expenditures by Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

According to Turkish media outlet SPORX, Galatasaray has made an initial inquiry for Baleba, but the club is unlikely to meet Brighton’s £77 million demand. This development could allow Manchester United to reengage in negotiations.

INEOS Sets Manchester United’s Valuation

Journalist Ben Jacobs, speaking on the Market Madness podcast, disclosed that INEOS valued Baleba at £75 million last summer. Following his inconsistent season and injury setbacks, the club intends to offer less than that figure if they pursue the player again.

Jacobs stated, “You have Carlos Baleba who’s still there. If Man United revisit that deal, the player wants Manchester United. Terms were agreed with the player last summer, but it depends on if Man United want to rekindle that deal now they’ve missed out on other targets.”

He added, “It’s also contingent on Brighton not turning around and saying Elliot Anderson, £116 million, and so on, Mateus Fernandes, £85 million, and pointing to a number that starts with a one and has two zeros on it, because Man United’s valuation of Carlos Baleba last summer was £75 million.”

Transfer Market Constraints Press Manchester United to Act

Jacobs further explained, “That was when Baleba was peak interest, peak form, now he’s coming off the back of a less consistent season, a couple of injuries, and Manchester United, if they were to go for Baleba, would want to pay less than they were willing to pay last summer. Brighton are always tough negotiators.”

With several primary targets becoming unavailable, Manchester United may need to take a calculated risk on Baleba. The midfielder reportedly prefers a move to Old Trafford and could influence Brighton to decrease their asking price after last year’s missed opportunity.

Michael Carrick is expected to seek up to three new signings to strengthen Manchester United’s midfield, with Baleba potentially among them.
