Platini Supports Mbappe's Political Warning Against Far Right in France

Kylian Mbappe has publicly expressed concern about the far-right National Rally potentially winning France's presidential election, prompting support from Michel Platini alongside caution about the national team role.

Mbappe's statement sparked political debate, with National Rally leader Jordan Bardella responding on social media. Platini defended Mbappe's right to voice opinions but emphasized the need to separate personal views from national team duties.

In a Vanity Fair interview, Mbappe said, “It affects me, I know what it means and what consequences it can have for my country when people like them come to power.”

Addressing this on RTL, Platini said, “Kylian Mbappe is right to take a stand when he's not wearing the captain's armband or the French national team jersey. If he's in Madrid or elsewhere, he can take a political stance, of course. But with the French national team armband, with the French national team jersey, you're playing for all French people. So it's difficult to take a stand.”

Platini praised the intelligence of modern footballers and acknowledged Mbappe's courage while warning about the divisive effects of public political statements. He added, “It's good that intelligent people can take a stand on societal issues. Footballers aren't necessarily idiots. Some of them are actually quite intelligent. As soon as you take a stand, you'll upset half the world. Unless you stand by everything you say. I think Kylian does.”

Mbappe now faces the challenge of balancing his political stance with his sporting duties as France prepares for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. France, in Group I, will open their campaign against Senegal at MetLife Stadium on June 16, followed by matches against Iraq and Norway.

The national team captain aims to focus on his performance and lead Les Bleus towards a strong showing in the tournament despite the ongoing political controversy.
