Negotiations continue between Chelsea and Aston Villa over a potential new transfer agreement, marking a third deal following earlier transactions involving Alejandro Garnacho and Morgan Rogers. Villa has already arranged to sign Garnacho on loan with an obligation to purchase, subsequent to their record sale of Morgan Rogers for £117 million.

Reports from the British newspaper Daily Mail indicate that Aston Villa is considering acquiring Senegalese forward Nicolas Jackson. Jackson joined Chelsea in 2023 but struggled to secure a regular first-team position. Last season, he was loaned to Bayern Munich, who opted not to make the transfer permanent.

Financial Regulations Impacting Transfer Deals

The structure of these transfers is critical for both clubs due to compliance requirements with UEFA's squad cost ratio rules and financial settlement agreements set for 2025. The £117 million sale of Rogers is projected to generate net accounting profits exceeding £80 million for Villa after deducting Middlesbrough's sell-on fee and the remaining book value from Rogers’ 2024 transfer.

In contrast, transferring Garnacho directly from Chelsea to Villa as part of the same financial transaction could lead UEFA to classify the operation as a "swap deal," which would limit the accounting profits that both clubs can report.

Timing and Regulatory Challenges of the Garnacho Deal

Completing the Garnacho transfer on the deadline day of 1 September would still fall short of the 45-day window required. This shortfall complicates efforts to argue before financial committees that the Garnacho and Rogers deals are unrelated.

The loan-with-obligation structure of the Garnacho deal might also be considered part of a swap deal, given that the purchase obligation was agreed upon within 45 days of Rogers’ sale. However, the terms provide Aston Villa with greater flexibility regarding the finalization date, offering more latitude in negotiations with European Union financial auditors.

Nicolas Jackson’s Position and Previous Connection to Villa’s Manager

Nicolas Jackson did not join Chelsea’s squad for their pre-season tour in Australia, opting instead to take a holiday following his recent World Cup participation. The Senegalese striker has previously worked with Aston Villa’s manager Unai Emery during Emery’s tenure at Villarreal.
