A recent study reveals that green tea provides higher levels of heart-protective flavanols than apples, emphasizing the importance of food quality over quantity.

A recent study has highlighted that the type of fruits, vegetables, and beverages consumed may hold greater significance for health than the sheer number of daily servings. The research demonstrated that a single cup of green tea can deliver health benefits surpassing those of an apple, due to its higher content of flavanol compounds linked to cardiovascular protection and overall health improvement.
Researchers explained that flavanols are natural plant compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce the risk of heart disease. However, the amounts of these compounds vary significantly among different fruits and vegetables.
The study tracked the dietary patterns of over 30,000 participants from the United Kingdom and the United States, utilizing biomarker measurements. It found that fewer than 20% of participants consumed the recommended daily intake of flavanols, which exceeds 500 mg per day. Additionally, the results showed that many individuals adhering to the guideline of five daily servings of fruits and vegetables, as recommended by the UK National Health Service, still did not obtain sufficient amounts of these compounds.
The researchers compiled a list of the top ten dietary sources rich in flavanols. Green tea ranked fourth, ahead of apples, strawberries, and blueberries. A single 250 ml cup of green tea contains approximately 200 mg of flavanols, while 150 grams of blueberries provide about 80 mg.
Professor Günter Conley stated that the recommendation to consume five servings of fruits and vegetables daily remains valid. However, the selection of these servings is as important as their quantity, given the varying flavanol content across different types.
The researchers also noted that previous studies have linked green tea consumption to a reduced risk of several diseases, including certain cancers, cardiovascular diseases, neurological, respiratory, and metabolic disorders. They recommend including green tea in a balanced diet but advise avoiding its consumption in the evening due to its caffeine content, which may affect sleep quality in some individuals.
