Ciara Miller Scores 15 on DWTS Debut, Promises Smiles Ahead
Ciara Miller of Summer House responded to criticism of her facial expressions during her Dancing With the Stars Season 35 premiere with a TikTok rehearsal clip captioned “I promise to smile from here on out,” following a foxtrot that earned 15 points.

Miller opened her Dancing With the Stars Season 35 run with a foxtrot to Whitney Houston’s “Exhale (Shoop Shoop),” scoring 15 out of 30 points on the September 16 premiere. The performance drew attention not for technical execution but for her serious expression during the live broadcast — prompting viewer commentary that she addressed directly on TikTok.
What prompted Miller’s “smile from here on out” pledge
According to Us Weekly, Miller posted a rehearsal clip showing herself repeatedly grinning alongside professional partner Brandon Armstrong. Her caption read: “I promise to smile from here on out.” The video followed widespread social media discussion about her demeanor during the debut routine.
Judge Carrie Ann Inaba responded emotionally to the performance, telling Miller she could both see and feel the emotion in it. The routine marked the culmination of months of training between Miller and Armstrong, who began working together ahead of the season’s April cast announcement.
Background to the debut
Miller and Maura Higgins were the first two reality stars confirmed for DWTS Season 35 in April. Miller previously stated she danced growing up and studied ballet for 10 years. Her entry into the competition followed sustained anticipation surrounding her ballroom debut.
The criticism focused almost exclusively on her facial expression rather than choreography or footwork. Miller had already acknowledged nerves as a factor influencing her on-stage presence before the premiere aired.
Support from cast and partner
Before the first episode, Carl Radke — a fellow Summer House star — publicly endorsed Miller, highlighting her work ethic, confidence, and dance ability. Armstrong, meanwhile, reacted to her TikTok post in the comments, labeling her response “elite work.”
Dancing With the Stars Season 35 airs Tuesdays on ABC and Disney+.
