More than 16 weeks after Nancy Guthrie vanished, a former FBI agent proposes several theories, including a motive rooted in tormenting her family.

Over four months have passed since Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her Tucson residence, yet her location remains unknown. Jennifer Coffindaffer, a former FBI special agent, has presented multiple theories regarding the case, highlighting one particularly unsettling motive.
Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie, went missing on February 1. Despite ongoing investigations by the FBI and local authorities, no suspects have been publicly named, and no arrests have been made. Thousands of leads are still being pursued.
On the social platform X, Coffindaffer shared four scenarios that might explain the disappearance, clarifying these are speculative and based on patterns from previous criminal cases rather than official findings.
One scenario involves a carefully planned kidnapping-for-ransom scheme. Coffindaffer suggested that perpetrators may have targeted Nancy after researching her family, intending to demand a multimillion-dollar ransom by exploiting perceived vulnerabilities.
Another theory considers the involvement of a distant relative. Coffindaffer noted that investigators have reportedly cleared immediate family members, though some online speculation persists about extended family connections. She indicated this was not her preferred explanation.
A third possibility points to someone familiar to the family, such as a handyman or a trusted local individual, who might have orchestrated the abduction.
The fourth and most alarming theory involves revenge. Coffindaffer proposed that the perpetrator could be motivated by a desire to cause emotional pain to the Guthrie family and to generate public suspicion around those close to Nancy.
“This would be someone completely obsessed with torturing the Guthrie family,” Coffindaffer stated.
Investigators continue to analyze forensic evidence from the scene, including blood samples currently examined at the FBI laboratory in Quantico. With approximately 50,000 leads reviewed, former detective Robbie Mayer recently indicated that the suspect’s identity might already be contained within the extensive information gathered.
As the investigation proceeds, Nancy Guthrie’s whereabouts remain unknown.
