Japan Raises Visa Fees for First Time in 50 Years to Improve Immigration Services
Japan is increasing visa fees for foreigners for the first time in nearly five decades to enhance immigration services and support language integration programs.

Japan has taken an unprecedented step by raising visa fees for foreign entrants for the first time in approximately 50 years, a decision aimed at improving immigration services and strengthening language integration initiatives.
The Independent reported that Japanese authorities will implement the visa fee increase starting next month. Under the new policy, the fee for a single-entry visa will rise from $19 to $93, while fees for multiple-entry visas could reach around $190.
The Japanese government justifies this increase by citing the need to fund enhancements in immigration services, support Japanese language education programs for newcomers, and bolster efforts to combat violations related to overstaying legal residence periods.
US-Iran Negotiations and Economic Concerns
International media have also highlighted other global issues, including US-Iran negotiations, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the future of UK-EU relations.
Bloomberg reported that US President Donald Trump acknowledged that concerns over global economic repercussions were a primary factor in signing the memorandum of understanding with Iran. This admission may reveal weaknesses in the US negotiation stance moving forward.
The agency suggested that this recognition could limit the US delegation's flexibility in future talks with Tehran, especially given Iran's awareness of the US administration's sensitivity to new economic disruptions.
Bloomberg further noted that Trump's hesitation to resume military confrontation or trigger global economic shocks might reduce pressure on Iran, allowing it more leeway to approach negotiations at a slower pace.
Challenges in the Russia-Ukraine Conflict
Regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, Politico cited experts who stated that Moscow faces a growing structural challenge in defending against Ukrainian drone attacks, which have increasingly penetrated deep into Russian territory.
The magazine indicated that Kyiv's drone operations have sent a direct message to Russian citizens that the war is no longer distant from their daily lives. Ukraine continues to refine its battlefield tactics and employs drone launches from multiple, hard-to-trace locations.
Meanwhile, The Washington Post reported that Poland's decision to revoke the Order of the White Eagle awarded to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is a political warning. This move reflects Warsaw's intent to set clear boundaries it does not wish to cross in its relationship with Kyiv.
European Public Opinion on UK-EU Relations
In European affairs, a poll published by The Guardian and conducted by the European Council revealed that about two-thirds of EU citizens support the UK's return to the bloc. This result indicates a notable shift in European sentiment after years of Brexit-related repercussions.
