Apple has disclosed technical details behind its approach to minimizing the visible crease at the center of the iPhone Duo’s inner foldable display—a persistent engineering challenge for foldable smartphones.

How the matte screen layer reduces crease visibility

The company emphasized that the solution extends beyond the hinge alone and incorporates deliberate design choices within the display itself. Apple applied a final nano-textured matte layer to the inner screen surface, engineered to suppress light reflections. This treatment makes subtle surface variations—including the crease region—less perceptible during normal viewing.

Tom Marib, Apple’s Vice President of Device Engineering, stated that the matte finish was selected specifically to diminish the visual prominence of surface changes near the hinge area, particularly after extended, repeated use over time.

Hinge refinement complements the display design

In parallel, Apple redesigned the hinge mechanism, fine-tuning its rotational torque characteristics. The adjustments aim to deliver a more stable, controlled feel when fully opening, fully closing, or holding the device in a half-folded position.

The company expects the combined effect of the optimized hinge and the matte-treated display surface to sustain a more uniform visual appearance across the inner screen—even as users repeatedly open and fold the device.

Trade-offs of the matte finish

While the matte layer helps conceal the crease and reduce glare, Apple acknowledged that such a finish may impact certain visual attributes relative to glossy displays—namely contrast, sharpness, and content rendering fidelity under specific lighting conditions.

The definitive assessment will come once the iPhone Duo reaches end users, enabling direct comparisons with competing foldable handsets. Its large inner display is a central component of the foldable user experience, and Apple’s success will hinge on balancing crease mitigation against sustained image quality.
