Erling Haaland Leads Norway to Historic World Cup Round of 16 Qualification
Erling Haaland scored a late goal to secure Norway's first-ever World Cup knockout stage win, while his father showed deep emotion in the stands.
At the AT&T Stadium, Erling Haaland's father, Alf-Inge Haaland, appeared deeply moved in the stands after his son propelled Norway to a historic qualification for the World Cup round of 16 with a late goal against Ivory Coast.
The decisive goal came in the 86th minute when Patrick Berg broke past the Ivorian defense and delivered a cross into the six-yard box, where Haaland was perfectly positioned to calmly finish into the net. This sparked an overwhelming celebration among thousands of Norwegian fans present at the stadium.
While Haaland celebrated with his teammates, cameras captured Alf-Inge Haaland in the crowd, visibly emotional and nearly in tears, covering his face with his hands before erupting in joy as the final whistle confirmed Norway's advancement.
This victory marked Norway's first-ever win in the knockout stages of a major tournament. It also carried special significance for the Haaland family, coming 32 years after Alf-Inge Haaland participated with Norway in the last World Cup held on American soil, where the team was eliminated in the group stage.
Erling Haaland will next face a new challenge leading Norway's attack against Brazil in the World Cup round of 16 on Sunday evening.
Haaland has now scored 25 goals in his last 13 official international matches, continuing his remarkable form with the national team.
Following the win, the Norwegian players celebrated on the pitch with the famous "Viking rowing" celebration, led by team captain Martin Ødegaard, amid enthusiastic support from the crowd at AT&T Stadium.
Meanwhile, Brazil overcame a tough comeback to defeat Japan in Houston. After trailing 1-0 at halftime due to a goal by Kaishu Sono, the Brazilian team, coached by Carlo Ancelotti, regained control in the second half. Casemiro equalized with a powerful header, and Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli scored the winning goal in stoppage time after coming on as a substitute.
