US President Donald Trump announced that he discussed the Iranian response with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday evening, among other matters.
Trump said in statements to the "Axios" website: "It was a very nice call. We have a good relationship."
He added that the Iran negotiations "are my situation, and not anyone else's situation."
Earlier on Sunday, Trump told Axios in a brief phone call that he would reject Iran's response to the latest draft agreement to end the war.
The United States waited for the Iranian response for ten days, which came on Sunday.
The White House had hoped that Iran's positions would show more progress toward reaching an agreement, but Trump's initial reaction indicates the opposite.
Trump said: "I don't like their tone. It is inappropriate. And I don't like their response," refusing to go into further details about what was in the response.
He continued: "They have been exploiting many countries for 47 years."
In a post on the "Truth Social" platform shortly after the call, Trump described the Iranian response as "completely unacceptable!"
Official Iranian media reported that the Iranian response focused on ending the war and cementing guarantees that it would not resume, before anything else.
The "Tasnim" agency, affiliated with the Revolutionary Guard, said that the Iranian text "emphasizes the necessity of lifting US sanctions, ending the war on all fronts," and ensuring Iranian administration of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the report, Iran demanded an end to the US naval blockade immediately upon signing the agreement.
According to the "Tasnim" agency, the response maintained the proposed format of an initial memorandum of understanding followed by 30 days of negotiations, but insisted on lifting US sanctions related to Iranian oil sales during that 30-day period.
Iran also demanded the release of frozen assets upon the initial signing of the memorandum of understanding.
According to the website, if these conditions are confirmed, they are far from what American negotiators had hoped for.
Official Iranian media also did not specify any nuclear concessions that Iran was prepared to make.
An Iranian source told the "Tasnim" agency: "We have just seen the reaction of the so-called President of the United States to Iran's response. This response is of no importance; there is no one in Iran writing proposals to please Trump. The negotiation team must formulate proposals that only consider the rights of the Iranian people, and if Trump is not satisfied with them, it is naturally better."
Trump did not clarify in the brief interview whether he intends to continue negotiations or resort to military action.
