Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen criticized US efforts to exert control over Greenland, calling it a challenge and unacceptable interference.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated that the United States' desire to impose control over Greenland poses a problem and challenge for Denmark. Speaking to the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR), Rasmussen described the situation as "definitely not good" and acknowledged it as a clear issue and challenge.
Rasmussen's remarks came amid renewed US interest in Greenland's sovereignty, with President Donald Trump reiterating the necessity for the island to remain under American control. The Danish minister indicated that there are ongoing efforts to thwart US plans concerning Greenland.
These comments reflect the depth of the ongoing diplomatic tensions between Denmark and the United States over Greenland, which holds autonomous status.
The initial statement by Rasmussen followed investigative reports by DR revealing that American agents conducted "covert influence operations" within Greenland. According to Danish intelligence, these agents infiltrated Greenlandic society aiming to persuade local inhabitants to separate from Denmark and either integrate with or form a direct alliance with the United States.
In response, Rasmussen summoned the US chargé d'affaires in Copenhagen and made it clear that Washington's attempts to interfere with Denmark's territorial integrity and the Greenlandic people's right to self-determination were "completely unacceptable."
Previously, after high-level talks in Washington with US officials, Rasmussen had acknowledged Denmark's failure to convince the Trump administration to abandon its plans to acquire or control the island.
President Trump had returned to the Greenland issue after a long pause, asserting on Tuesday the importance of the island remaining under US control. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen responded on Wednesday, stating that Greenland is not for sale.
