From July 1, 2026, Ireland will take over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union amid rising geopolitical challenges, overseeing approximately 300 ongoing dossiers. These include protracted budget negotiations, European defense matters, support for Ukraine, relations with neighboring countries, and the Mercosur agreement.

Dublin has announced that its main priority during its term will be to enhance the Union's competitiveness through five key areas. These focus on simplifying regulatory frameworks to reduce administrative burdens, accelerating development in housing, energy, and infrastructure, and strengthening the integration of the single market by removing barriers, encouraging internal trade, and ensuring equal opportunities for businesses. Additionally, Ireland aims to support robust international trade by expanding partnerships with reliable allies and enhancing the resilience of supply chains.

Energy transition is central to Ireland's agenda, emphasizing the reinforcement of supply security, speeding up the shift to clean energy, and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The presidency also plans to develop European capabilities in digital technology and artificial intelligence, including cloud computing and submarine cable security, by organizing a specialized summit bringing together governments and the private sector.

Alongside these priorities, Ireland will work to support sustainable agriculture and fisheries, foster an innovation-friendly environment, expand educational mobility programs such as Erasmus, and promote investments in emerging strategic sectors like semiconductors and biotechnology. The presidency also intends to update legislative frameworks related to health and medical technologies to strengthen the EU's economic and strategic adaptability in a changing international environment, according to Western media sources.

In related developments, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu stated that Hezbollah has only 8% of its missile stockpile remaining. Furthermore, Ireland has banned the entry of Ben Gvir and Smotrich into its territory.
