Acting President Delcy Rodríguez of Venezuela pledged on Wednesday to hold elections in the country within a transitional process she said aims to reach "full democracy," without setting a specific date for the vote.
Rodríguez made the announcement during her speech before the United Nations General Assembly, explicitly affirming the push toward elections, alongside the start of dialogue with opposition forces and preparations to equip national institutions for the electoral process.
"There will be elections"
Speaking before the General Assembly, Rodríguez stated: "I want to make this absolutely clear before the General Assembly: there will be elections in Venezuela."
Rodríguez assumed power after U.S. forces arrested former President Nicolás Maduro during an attack in January of last year.
During her speech, the acting president did not reveal a timeline for the elections, limiting herself to confirming that the country is moving forward in a transition toward what she described as "full democracy."
Dialogue with the opposition
Rodríguez revealed that the government has begun talks with the opposition, emphasizing that the political process will ensure participation from all political forces in the country.
She added that work is ongoing simultaneously to prepare national election institutions for the upcoming vote, without providing further details about the election date or the timeframes preceding its organization.
Rodríguez presented the ongoing path as the beginning of a new political era in Venezuela, stating the country has started a "democratic transformation process" aimed at restarting itself.
She added that this transformation seeks to build a country "more free for everyone, more prosperous, and more reconciled with itself."
