Trump Calls for Severe Punishment of Bolton After Guilty Plea in Classified Information Case
Donald Trump demands harsh penalties for John Bolton following his guilty plea in a classified information case, criticizing his conduct and role in political conflicts.

Donald Trump described John Bolton as a "terrible person" and expressed his hope that Bolton would face "strict" consequences. The former president made these remarks in a post on his platform, Truth Social, where he accused Bolton of consistently seeking to "cause trouble and wars." Trump stated that Bolton played an inciting role that led to "death and destruction" in various political matters.
In his post, Trump wrote: "John Bolton, a very stupid, unbalanced, and incompetent former United States representative, has just pleaded guilty! He is a very bad person, crazy and only wanted to stir up problems and ignite wars, unnecessarily pushing toward death and destruction wherever he went. I hope he is punished with the harshest penalties."
Bolton pleaded guilty on Friday in a federal court as part of a deal with prosecutors, marking a significant development in cases concerning the handling of classified information within U.S. institutions. The agreement includes a potential sentence of up to five years (60 months) in prison, along with a financial penalty of $2.25 million.
According to prosecutors, Bolton will be required to pay half of the fine within five days of sentencing and will lose his retirement pension. The final sentencing is scheduled for October 28.
The dispute between Trump and Bolton dates back to 2019 when Bolton left his position as National Security Advisor following sharp disagreements with Trump, particularly over adopting tougher policies toward Iran and North Korea.
The tension escalated after Bolton published his 2020 memoir, "The Room Where It Happened," in which he strongly criticized Trump’s performance, accusing him of making decisions driven by personal and electoral considerations.
Since then, Bolton has continued to publicly criticize Trump, especially regarding his policies toward Iran. Recently, Bolton claimed that Tehran is "manipulating" the U.S. president to achieve its negotiation goals.
This case represents one of the rare instances in which the U.S. Department of Justice has made progress in prosecuting former officials over mishandling classified information amid a politically polarized environment.
Trump’s recent statements also highlight the ongoing personal and political conflict between the two, intersecting with sensitive issues in American foreign policy, particularly in the Middle East.
