Trump Signs Security Agreement with Denmark and Greenland, Says He'll Build Two Major Military Bases

President American Donald Trump signed a security agreement with leaders of Greenland and Denmark on Tuesday during ceremonies held in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings.

Trump said during the signing ceremony: "This will be a wonderful and long-lasting relationship."

Earlier, Trump had stated the agreement would grant the United States "permanent control" over Greenland's security, an autonomous territory belonging to Denmark in the Arctic region, which Trump has long expressed interest in controlling.

Before signing the agreement, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said: "Mr. President, you have been very clear. You do not want adversaries to come too close."

She added: "I completely agree with you, and under this agreement, they won't." She clarified that adversaries would not be allowed to gain control over the territory or exert significant influence there.

Meanwhile, Greenland Prime Minister Jørgen Fredrik Nielsen said Greenland "is vital for North American security and transatlantic security."

He added: "This agreement reflects our recognition of our responsibility and our actions based on that recognition."

Since returning to the presidency in January 2025, Trump has repeatedly emphasized that the United States needs to control Greenland for strategic reasons.

Trump's stance has alarmed Denmark, a U.S. ally in NATO, and sparked strong opposition within the alliance.
