UNHCR Reports 112,000 Displaced in Yemen Amid West Coast Escalation

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) confirmed that more than 112,000 individuals have been forced from their homes across Yemen within the last fourteen days.

This displacement stems directly from renewed military escalation along the nation’s western coastline, further deepening an already deteriorating humanitarian crisis.

Sandrine Dessimour, UNHCR Representative in Djibouti, stated during a press briefing in Geneva that ongoing hostilities have triggered mass flight by thousands of families. Approximately 3,000 people crossed the Gulf of Aden into Djibouti in under seven days.

Strain on Djibouti’s refugee infrastructure

Djiboutian authorities are preparing to receive up to 10,000 additional refugees, a development expected to place severe pressure on the country’s health and education systems. Djibouti currently hosts around 36,000 refugees, the majority of whom originate from Somalia and Ethiopia.
