US Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet Crashes in Washington State
A US Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet crashed near Rimrock Lake in Washington during a training flight, causing a wildfire and minor pilot injuries.
On June 13, a US Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet crashed near Rimrock Lake in Yakima County, Washington, south of Mt. Rainier, during a midday training flight.
The aircraft, based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in California, was involved in the accident that also ignited a forest fire in the area. The pilot ejected safely using a parachute and sustained minor injuries before being rescued by the county sheriff's office.
The 11th Marine Aircraft Wing confirmed the identity of the crashed plane as an F/A-18 Hornet belonging to the Marine Corps. According to their statement, the incident occurred around noon and involved one of their aircraft stationed at Miramar.
Local television channel KOMO News reported the military plane crash near Rimrock Lake and the subsequent wildfire that followed the accident.
The responsible unit indicated that the investigation into the crash could take several months and declined to provide further details at this time.
