The United States military declared the end of its most recent series of military strikes against Iran early Wednesday, with officials indicating that operations are expected to continue for a longer period.

According to the US Central Command, American forces completed a new wave of precision attacks against more than 80 Iranian targets on Wednesday. These strikes were launched as an immediate response to Iran's recent assaults on commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

These military actions coincided with statements from senior US officials to the Wall Street Journal, revealing that US naval forces in the Middle East are preparing to reinstate a maritime blockade if ordered by President Donald Trump.

On Tuesday, the US administration disrupted Iran's ability to legally sell oil, acting decisively in retaliation for Tehran's recent attacks on ships near the Strait of Hormuz.

The recent strikes and the US decision regarding Iranian oil threaten to undermine a temporary peace agreement, which took weeks of negotiation to establish, and risk causing an increase in global oil prices.

These attacks represent the most significant escalation since the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17 aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending hostilities, according to the Wall Street Journal.

A senior military official told the newspaper that the Wednesday strikes were planned to be far more extensive, intending to deliver a strong message to Tehran following its recent aggressions.

The source added that the United States still considers the ceasefire agreement to be in effect, while President Trump has expressed a preference to continue the agreement rather than move toward full-scale war, despite not ruling out military options amid his ongoing threats toward Iran.
