Yemeni Civilian, Policeman Killed in Houthi-Linked Taiz Clashes

A Yemeni civilian and a security force member were killed, while two others sustained injuries, during an exchange of gunfire on Friday involving a suspected Houthi-affiliated armed individual in the town of al-Musharraqa, located in al-Shamaytin district in southern Taiz Governorate. The area remains a flashpoint in ongoing violent confrontations between government forces and Houthi fighters.

Local sources told Erum News that an unidentified armed man, fully equipped in military gear, arrived in al-Musharraqa and declined to identify himself in response to repeated calls from residents.

According to those sources, several residents—whose town lies dozens of kilometers away from areas under Houthi control—immediately surrounded the armed man after alerting security authorities. Before security forces arrived, he opened fire, killing one person and wounding another.

Security operation and initial findings

Taiz Police stated that its units in al-Shamaytin district launched a security operation targeting an armed individual suspected of links to the Houthis. The operation resulted in an armed confrontation, leading to the death of the civilian and one police officer, injuries to two additional individuals, and the killing of the suspected Houthi gunman.

The police statement added that preliminary investigations indicate the gunman had been part of a Houthi military unit operating in the western coast region. Security forces subsequently conducted a sweep of the area to verify whether other armed individuals remained present.

Civilian cooperation and broader counter-Houthi efforts

The statement commended the vigilance, awareness, and cooperation of local residents in reporting suspicious movements and activities to security agencies. It further noted that provincial security agencies have, in recent periods, apprehended multiple Houthi-linked cells and operatives and foiled several plots aimed at undermining security and stability.
