Chelsea have finalized a £117 million transfer deal with Aston Villa for winger Morgan Rogers, who is expected to sign a six-year contract with an option for an additional year. Rogers is scheduled to undergo a medical examination on Monday following his return from the United States after participating in England's World Cup campaign.

Despite Arsenal targeting Rogers as their primary forward this summer and planning to approach Villa after the World Cup, they were unwilling to meet the £117 million asking price. Rogers is therefore set to join Chelsea, a club that will not be competing in European football next season, foregoing Champions League opportunities offered by Villa or Arsenal.

At 23 years old, Rogers will become the most expensive British player, surpassing the recent record set by Manchester City's £116 million signing of Elliot Anderson. His transfer will also break Chelsea's club record, exceeding the £115 million paid for Moises Caicedo in 2023.

Last season, Rogers scored 14 goals and contributed 11 assists in 55 appearances for Aston Villa. Since his transfer from Middlesbrough in January 2024 for £16 million, he has developed into a full England international, earning 21 caps. During the 2026 World Cup, he made five appearances and assisted Anthony Gordon in England's semi-final loss to Argentina.

Middlesbrough will receive an additional £20.3 million from this deal due to a 20 percent sell-on clause included when they sold Rogers to Villa for £15.5 million. This brings Middlesbrough’s total earnings from Rogers to £35.8 million, with £34.7 million being profit, considering they acquired him from Manchester City for £1.1 million in July 2023 and sold him after six months.

Insights from Chelsea and Villa Perspectives

Sky Sports News chief correspondent Kaveh Solhekol commented that Rogers is currently in the United States with the England squad but will have his medical in London once England returns. The contract is expected to last six years with an option for an additional year, which is standard for Chelsea. Solhekol highlighted Rogers’ status as the Europa League Player of the Year last season and described the transfer as a significant statement of intent from Chelsea, signaling their ambition despite a recent poor season and a new manager, Xabi Alonso.

Solhekol noted that Villa had no pressure to sell Rogers, who had extended his contract until 2031 and could have played in the Champions League next season. He also remarked on Chelsea’s stature as a major English club and the expectations surrounding Alonso’s appointment, suggesting assurances were made regarding transfer backing.

Sky Sports' Lewis Jones described Aston Villa’s summer transfer window as a series of setbacks, with key players including Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne, and now Rogers departing. Tielemans moved to Manchester United, and Digne is expected to join Paris Saint-Germain. Jones characterized the loss of Rogers, Villa’s standout performer and symbol of the club’s future, as a major blow, leaving the squad significantly weakened.

Jones emphasized that Villa’s manager, Unai Emery, who had expressed intentions to build on recent successes, now faces the challenge of reconstructing the team’s core while competing on multiple fronts. Although Johan Manzambi is expected to arrive, Jones noted that potential does not immediately replace proven Premier League quality.

Former Manchester City Youth Players at Chelsea

Rogers will be the seventh former Manchester City youth player to join Chelsea since the club’s recent takeover. Joe Shields, Chelsea’s co-director of recruitment and talent and former head of academy recruitment at Manchester City, has been instrumental in these signings. Shields previously worked alongside Enzo Maresca, former Chelsea manager and former head coach of Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad.

The list of ex-Man City youth players signed by Chelsea includes:

  • Morgan Rogers – summer 2026, £117 million (pending completion)
  • Jamie Gittens – summer 2025, £51.5 million
  • Liam Delap – summer 2025, £30 million
  • Jadon Sancho – summer 2024, loan
  • Tosin Adarabioyo – summer 2024, free
  • Romeo Lavia – summer 2023, £58 million
  • Cole Palmer – summer 2023, £40 million

The total expenditure on these players amounts to £296.5 million, with further signings anticipated.
